Biogas: What is it?

Biogas is the gas (mostly methane) that comes from the anaerobic decomposition of organic materials. These materials can be either plant or animal waste, although animal waste is more easily "digested".

Biogas is made in a digester or "biodigester", a man-made contraption that seals off the oxygen from what is typically a mixture of organic material and water. (Of course, biogas is often called marsh gas because this anaerobic process takes place naturally in wetlands.)

To see an example of a digester: check out this biodigester design in Costa Rica or learn more about the biogas project that the women of Santa Fe executed.
