Al Gore Green Energy Goals by 2018

From the Video
Thank you for your leadership in the scientific community. I spoke with Senator Barack Obama, as well, as Senator John McCain, Who does out of the partisan framework.ladies and gentlemen. There are times in the history of our nation. When our very way of life depends upon dispelling allusions and awakening to the challenge of the present danger. We are called upon to move quickly to throw aside, old habits and be alert to the necessity of making big changes. The survival of United States of America is at risk. Gasoline prices are increasing dramatically, as well as electricity rates. Jobs are being outsourced. The climate crisis is getting a lot worse more quickly than predicted. the climate crisis is getting a lot worse, much more quickly than predicted. Scientists with access to data from Navy submarines have now warned us that there is a 75% chance that within only five years the entire north polar ice caps will disappear during the summer months. According to experts, one of the largest Greenland icebergs is moving at a faster rate than ever before. Just two days ago at 27 senior statesman and military leaders warned of the national security crisis due to our dependence on foreign oil. They seem to be longer droughts more flooding. Higher temperatures lead to drier vegetation, which leads to kindling for huge fires. Scientists in the department of geophysics tell us for every 1° in temperature lightning strikes will go up another 10%. Lightning is responsible for the conflagration in California today. We're borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf. If we grab ahold of that common thread and pull it hard. All of these complex problems begin to unravel. The answer is to end our reliance on carbon-based fuels. One thing has become abundantly clear. When you connect the dots the real solutions to the climate crisis are the same men measures to renew our economy. What if we can use fuels that are not expensive, don't cause pollution and are abundantly available right here at home.the face of the earth in just 40 minutes enough solar energy falls to power 100% of our energy you needs for an entire year. in the Midwest corridorthere is enough wind that passes through four. All of the United States energy needs for entire year.geothermal energy similarly is capable of providing enormous supply of electricity for America could guess the cheapest most efficient and best way to start using all of this renewable energy is in the production of electricity. We can start right now using solar power, wind power and geothermal power to make electricity for our homes and businesses, but to make this a reality. We need a new start. That is why I'm proposing today a strategic initiative that will free us from the crisis that's holding us down and regain control over our destiny. We need to re-empower America. My goal is to have America produce 100% of its electricity through a noble sources within 10 years. This goal is achievable, affordable and transformative. It represents a challenge to all Americans from all walks of life. A few years ago it would have been impossible to issue such a challenge. The dramatic price increases in oil and coal have dramatically change the energy landscape. Someone had said that if oil is $35 a barrel then renewable energy sources would become competitive. Well, oil is now at $135 per barrel. Consequently there is a lot of money going into research for all these green energy sources, renewable energy sources.as the demand for renewable energy grows, the costs will continue to fall. Let me give you one revealing example. The price of the specialized silicon used to make solar cells was recently as high as $100 per kilogram. Now contractors have prices as low as $50 per kilogram. The same thing happened with computer chips which are made from silicon. Prices have gone down 40 years in a row.here's the difference: when the demand goes up for coal sodas, the price. However, when demand goes up for a noble energy sources like solar power, the prices go down. So, we can't keep on relying on quickly depleting energy sources to fuel our ever increasing demand for energy.one source of fuel is expensive than going up, and another is free for everyone. Of course there are those who will tell us that this can't be done. Some of the voices we hear are the defenders of the status quo. Even those who read the prod profits of the carbon craze, must see the demise of this industry.after all, the Stone Age didn't end because of a lack of stones.what could we do instead. During these next 10 years. Some of our greatest accomplishments as a nation have resulted from commitments to reach a goal that fell well beyond the next election. Social Security the interstate highway system. 10 years is about the maximum time that we as a nation can hold a steady aim and hit our target. When President John F. Kennedy challenged our nation to land a man on the moon, many doubted we can accomplish that goal. But eight years later, Neil Armstrong Lance landed on the moon. We do not have a unified national grid. That is sufficiently advanced to link the areas where the sun shines and the wind blows to the cities in the East and the West that need this electricity. Today our grades are antiquated and fragile.
